13 to 15 crore new room air conditioners are expected to be sold in India in the next 10 years the burden on electricity will also increase
13 to 15 crore new air conditioners (AC) are going to be added in India in the next 10 years. This can increase the demand for electricity of the country to 180 GW (GW), which will put heavy pressure on the power system. It has been revealed in a new study of India Energy and Climate Center (IECC) of UC Berkeley (UC Berkeley).
Fear of electricity demand and crisis
According to the report, if steps are not taken wisely on this increasing demand, then India may face a huge reduction of electricity by 2026.
Essential facts
Every year 1-1.5 crore new ACs are being set in India.
Due to AC by 2030, the demand for electricity to 120 GW, and by 2035 by 180 GW can increase.
AC sales increased by 40-50 percent due to increase in heat.
Electricity consumption is expected to increase by 9-10 percent in the heat of 2024.
IECC’s Nikith Abhyankar has warned that AC is becoming the biggest cause of power peak demand. If the correct steps are not taken, you may have to take blackouts or expensive emergency solutions.
What is the solution?
The report shows that if India doubles the AC’s energy efficiency, then there can be a savings of 2.2 lakh crores along with saving electricity. Apart from this, 60 GW power demand can be reduced by 2035.
How will AC’s energy efficiency increase?
To do this, energy performance standards (MEPS) should be updated. At the same time, 1-star level from 2027 should be made equal to 5-star. Apart from this, the standard should be tightened every three years. According to India’s climate, AC testing should also be changed. Actually, there is a need to pay attention not only in India, not just cooling, but also on reducing moisture.
Apart from this, ‘Make in India’ and PLI schemes were promoted. Let me tell you, already more than 600 models are better than 5-star level. With this, India can become a global hub of sustainable and affordable cooling.
India will have to make smart decisions
If the government makes the right policy and Indian companies increase the production of Energy Efficient AC, then the power crisis can be avoided and consumers will also benefit. This will be a big step towards ‘Sustainable Cooling’ for India.
