3 Players Mumbai Indians Could Release Ahead of IPL 2026 Auction – Trade Brains

The Mumbai Indians (MI), one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), are likely to make some big changes ahead of the 2026 season. After a mixed performance in IPL 2025, the team will be looking to strengthen its squad by releasing underperforming players and freeing up their budget. Here are three players who might be released by Mumbai Indians before the IPL 2026 auction:
Mumbai Indians took a bold step by acquiring Deepak Chahar for a hefty ₹9.25 crore in the IPL 2025 auction. However, the experienced pacer couldn’t live up to expectations. He took just 11 wickets in 14 matches and conceded runs at an economy rate of over 9.17 per over.
With such high investment and low returns, MI may choose to release Chahar and look for more effective fast bowlers who can deliver consistently, especially during the powerplay and death overs.
Robin Minz, a young and exciting wicketkeeper-batter, was bought for ₹65 lakh in IPL 2025. While he showed potential during practice sessions, his performance in the actual game was underwhelming. He scored just 3 runs off 9 balls in his debut match against Chennai Super Kings.
Given the intense competition for places in the MI squad and the availability of better domestic wicketkeeping options, the team might decide to release Minz and invest in more experienced backup players.
England fast bowler Reece Topley is another name on the potential release list. Known for his left-arm pace and bounce, Topley has always struggled with injuries. In IPL 2025, he managed to play only one match and failed to make any notable impact.
With foreign player slots being limited, MI may not want to take another risk on an injury-prone player. Releasing Topley could help the team bring in a more reliable overseas bowler.
Releasing Chahar, Minz, and Topley would not only free up valuable space in the squad but also open up around ₹10-11 crore in the team’s purse. This money could be used to buy more impactful players in the IPL 2026 auction, helping MI rebuild a stronger and more balanced side.
Additionally, Mumbai can focus on acquiring young domestic talents or proven international stars who offer better consistency and fitness. They might also target all-rounders who can provide depth in both batting and bowling. With smarter picks, MI can address the gaps in  their pace attack and middle-order stability. Such moves could play a big role in reviving their championship hopes.
Mumbai Indians are known for their smart decision-making and long-term planning. Letting go of players who haven’t met expectations is a step toward building a more competitive team. With these possible releases, MI will hope to make better use of their budget and come back stronger in IPL 2026.
