Waqf amendment act: The Waqf Amendment Act has come into force in the entire country from today i.e. from April 8. Its notification has been issued by the Union Home Ministry. A total of 15 petitions have been filed against this law in the Supreme Court so far. The Central Government filed a cavity in the Supreme Court and requested to be heard before the order was passed on petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Hearing will be held in Supreme Court next week
The Supreme Court will hear the Waqf Amendment Act on 15 April 2025. It has been repeatedly said by the central government that this law is about property and its management, not about religion. The BJP says that the Waqf Bill has been prepared after consulting the large section of the people and has also got the support of non-Muslim minorities. According to the Center, women and children could not benefit from Waqf property, while the revised law will get this benefit.
Which provision is the dispute?
The controversial provisions of the revised law compulsorily include two non-Muslim members in the Central Waqf Council and the Waqf Board. A bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna had assured Kapil Sibal, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on 7 April 2025. President Draupadi Murmu approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on 5 April, which was passed last week after a long discussion in both houses of Parliament.
Protesters burnt police car in Bengal
The protest against the new Waqf Act in Murshidabad in West Bengal turned into violence. Initially, the police asked the protesters to protest at one place, but suddenly the protesters started going ahead of the place mentioned. During this time, a scuffle with the police started. According to the news agency IANS, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Vice President Malik Mutim Khan said, “The amendment in the Waqf Act is against the country’s Constitution. I believe that Parliament has the right to enact a law, but any law should be made within the scope of the constitution. I will consider the Waqf Law illegal and we will take the door of the court.”
