IPL 2025: Did CSK Get It Wrong At Auction? Here's What Chennai Super Kings Head Coach Stephen Fleming Said – Jagran English
IPL 2025: So far in the tournament, CSK have suffered seven defeats and are placed at the bottom of the points table.
IPL 2025: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming on Friday admitted that the five-time champions messed up in the mega-auction in 2024 after the franchise slumped to their seventh defeat in nine games.
CSK lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets here on Friday after another shoddy batting effort from the hosts, the result dealing a near-fatal blow to their play-off chances. Fleming said CSK’s issues in a lacklustre Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign may well have started at the player auction in November.
The franchise roped in 20 players in the two-day auction in Jeddah but they struggled to identify their best combination in the ongoing season, unlike in the past, and Fleming put his hand up to take some of the blame.

“It’s hard to say we got it completely right with the performances we’ve had. We’ve been looking over that in detail, around our style of play, and also at how the game is evolving,” Fleming told reporters.
“It’s not easy. That’s why we’re proud of our record today, that we’ve been able to be consistent for so long and it doesn’t take much for it to go another way.
“Other teams have got better and that’s the point of the auction. But we just haven’t been able to get it right. So you take responsibility from the top down and then you just ask a little more of the players.”
Brevis scored 42 against SRH, but more importantly, looked good against the spinners.
“It’s also not perfect science. The auction is a very fluid beast. It’s like buying 25 houses so you come away at the end of it mentally and physically exhausted. I still think we’ve got a good squad. We’re not far away,” Fleming said.

Foreigners such as Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra and Sam Curran, as well as Indian players like Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, and Vijay Shankar, could not step up in the first nine games.
“A couple of key injuries, a lack of form. We’ve struggled to nail a game plan. We’ve chopped and changed too much. There’s a lot of responsibility and soul-searching and it starts with me at the top, 100 per cent,” he added.
CSK have had one of their worst IPL seasons and are currently placed at the bottom of the points table with seven defeats. What is worse is that four of those losses have come at Chepauk, which remained their fortress for the longest time.
