Rana was brought from Los Angeles to India by a special aircraft along with NIA and National Security Guard (NSG) teams. In the US, Rana made several legal efforts to prevent his extradition, including an emergency petition in the US Supreme Court. After all the petitions were dismissed, extradition was possible. India’s Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Home Affairs completed the process in collaboration with US officials.

The NIA tried for years to extradite Rana. The agency worked closely with the US FBI, Department of Justice (USDOJ) and other agencies. Rana is accused of playing an important role in the conspiracy of Mumbai attacks.

The Mumbai attacks took place on 26 November 2008, when 10 terrorists attacked several places including Taj Hotel, Oberoi Trident, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Nariman House. This attack shook the whole country. Rana is accused of planning an attack with Lashkar-e-Taiba.
