Rain delays PBKS vs MI IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 clash
Rain gods have delayed the highly-anticipated IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad on June 1.
The all-important match, which was set to begin at 7:30 PM IST, faced an immediate challenge as rain started falling just as play was about to commence. After PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl first, the ground staff quickly covered the pitch and surrounding areas, leaving both players and a stadium full of eager fans waiting for the weather to clear.
This delay led many fans to wonder about the cut-off times for the match. According to IPL regulations, at least five overs per side must be completed for a match to be considered valid. The IPL has a two-hour buffer in place to accommodate such delays, aiming to avoid an abandoned game. This means that 9:40 PM IST is the cut-off time for a full 20-over match. If the game cannot be completed by then, or even a Super Over isn’t feasible, the team that finished higher in the league standings will automatically advance to the final. In this specific scenario, PBKS, having finished above MI in the league stage, would progress to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final.
Furthermore, there’s a cut-off time of 11:56 PM IST for a five-over contest. If even a shortened five-over game isn’t possible, a Super Over would be the next step to determine a winner. However, if conditions prevent even a Super Over, Punjab Kings would still advance to the final due to their superior position in the league standings.
If any of the Final, the Eliminator, Qualifier 1 or Qualifier 2 matches are tied, or there is no result, the following shall apply:
16.11.1 the relevant teams shall compete in a Super Over and if necessary further Super Overs to determine which team is the winner of the match in question; and
16.11.2 if conditions do not permit a Super Over, or subsequent Super Overs within the time available to determine the winner as described in Appendix F then the team which, at the end of the relevant regular Season, finished in the higher position in the League table (in accordance with clause 16.10 above) will be deemed the winner of the relevant play-off match.
The procedure for any Super Over shall be as set out in Appendix F.
Notably, there is no reserve day scheduled for Qualifier 2; only the final, set to be played on June 3, has a reserve day allocated. Therefore, fans and teams are eagerly hoping for a break in the weather to allow the match to proceed and determine the second finalist of IPL 2025.
