Shreyas Iyer In India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad? Commentator Backs PBKS Skipper’s Return – Cricket.com

Shreyas Iyer’s best-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) season surely must have made him a sure-shot starter in any other national team but not India, where the competition is too high. Ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, there is a lot of debate as to which Indian player should make their comeback.
Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra openly backed Iyer to mark his T20I comeback for the upcoming Asia Cup. Iyer last played the 20-over format for the country back in 2023 against Australia in Bengaluru.
Since then, the right-hander has shown his crazy form, including smashing 604 runs while leading Punjab Kings to their first-ever final in a decade in IPL 2025. Chopra added that Iyer’s inclusion would benefit India’s scoring rate in the middle overs.
“Shreyas Iyer needs to be spoken about because when we were watching the Champions Trophy, no Indian player was better than him in the middle overs. He was the guy who was taking the attack to the opposition. He was the guy who was hitting boundaries whenever he wished, and removing the pressure on the batter at the other end,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
However, where will Iyer fit in this Indian line-up? Chopra feels that it is a question that has no certain answer.
“We have built a case that Shreyas’ name should be there, but the truth is that Tilak Varma is playing either at No. 3 or No. 4. Since he has started playing at No. 3, he has been unstoppable. Since he bats lower down the order in the IPL, it’s an apple vs orange comparison. If you see his numbers, you feel the guy hasn’t done anything wrong,” he said.
“He also allows us one more thing. You can maintain a left-right combination. Will you drop Tilak Varma from the XI because I believe Shreyas Iyer’s best place to bat is either No. 3 or No. 4? If he goes to No. 5, I think it will be a little too low in T20 cricket, and Surya is at No. 4,” Chopra observed.
India are set to kick off their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on September 10 (Wednesday).
