Glenn Maxwell missing from 2026 IPL auction list after Ricky Ponting cuts Aussie superstar from Punjab Kings – 7NEWS

Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has turned his back on the Indian Premier League for just the second time in his career after declining to nominate for the auction.
The 37-year-old has long been a hot commodity in the showpiece T20 tournament, highlighted by multiple million-dollar contracts.
But the shortest format of the game leaves little margin for error and Maxwell has been off more often than not in recent years.

After averaging only 5.78 runs in 2024, he scored just 48 runs — with a top score of 30 — in 2025 before injury ended his season early.
Maxwell, a $715,000 pick-up for this year, was subsequently released by Ricky Ponting’s Punjab Kings after it was decided the big-hitting batsman would not be a first-choice selection for the 2026 campaign.
“I love Glenn and what he brings to the game. Unfortunately, last season we weren’t able to get the best out of him,” Ponting told Star Sports.
“Looking ahead to next season, we didn’t feel he would be part of our starting team, so we decided to release him.”
Maxwell would have loomed as a high-risk, high-reward option for other teams had he put his name down for the December 16 auction.
But now, for the first time since he skipped the 2019 edition in a bid to get back into the Australian Test team, he will not be seen in the next IPL tournament.
“After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year. It’s a big call, and one I make with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me,” he said on social media on Tuesday.
“The IPL has helped shape me as a cricketer and as a person. I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, represent incredible franchises, and perform in front of fans whose passion is unmatched.
“The memories, the challenges, and the energy of India will stay with me forever.
“Thank you for all your support over the years, hopefully see you soon.”
Maxwell recently had time out with a broken arm but is set to suit up for the Melbourne Stars in this summer’s Big Bash League.
Meanwhile, Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis has nominated for the IPL auction despite being released by the Punjab Kings because of apparent availability concerns.
Inglis scored 39 runs in the defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2025 final but Ponting felt he had no choice to make the call.
“Josh is a terrific player. I would have loved to have had him as part of our squad going forward,” Ponting said
“But he wasn’t going to be available for the majority of the tournament. So for that reason I found it pretty much impossible to be able to be able to retain him.”
Other Australians to nominate for the auction include Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar and hot-and-cold rising stars Cooper Connolly and Jake Fraser-McGurk.
Green, who has previously earned a $3m pay day from the IPL auction, missed the 2025 tournament with a back injury but is expected to be in high demand after proving his fitness to start the Australian summer.
