Akash Ambani Knows Every First-Class Player Around World: MI’s Talent Scout – Cricket.com
What makes the Mumbai Indians a successful T20 franchise?
Very often, the answer lies in the fact that they do extensive research behind the scenes in terms of scouting and recruitment. But none of that would have happened if not for their cricket crazy owner, Akash Ambani, who, according to TA Sekar, MI’s Talent scout, knows every first-class cricketer worldwide.
“I would give credit [of success] to Akash Ambani because he’s hands-on. He knows every player playing at the first-class level all around the world. He’s a driving force,” Sekar told Badrinath on his YouTube channel, ‘Cric It With Badri’.
Sekar also revealed that the five-time IPL winners also have an international-level ground at their corporate office in Mumbai, where they constantly have camps and trials to scout various talents in the country.
“Mumbai Indians have developed an international-standard ground at their corporate office, with 10,000 capacity. They also have a full-time physio, trainer and a gym available there, with a huge hospital,” he added.
He also spoke about how the advent of IPL has also provided new job opportunities, including for talent scouts and physios.
"IPL has provided a lot of people jobs, like physios and talent scouts. Every team now has at least four to five talent scouts. There were a few agents who were pushing the players to only certain franchises, which isn’t happening now, luckily,” he added in the same interview.
Last season, MI narrowly missed an opportunity to play in the final, losing the Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings, a clash where they failed to defend a 200+ score for the first time in IPL. Sekar spoke about the franchise’s disappointment, stating they have already started discussions for next season.
“Every year, if we don’t win the title, we are disappointed. That’s why they have won five times. They don’t have the attitude that: ‘Okay, we won five times, let’s wait for next year’. They already started working on the next season and how to win. We corrected all our mistakes from last year at the auction table,” he said.
So, where did it all go wrong for MI in IPL 2025?
“We lost two crucial players – Rickelton and Jacks – because of the IPL break. Bairstow compensated, but the team’s composition was broken. In the clash against PBKS, we dropped a couple of catches, which is where the match was lost. 205 was 15 short for us that day,” he concluded.
