Andy Flower, the head coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), mentioned how effective auction planning played a crucial role in their victory, ending an 18-year wait for the IPL title. RCB triumphed by six runs over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2025 final, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, claiming their first-ever championship.
Flower revealed that their auction strategy formed the foundation of their success. With a purse of Rs 83 crore, RCB made thoughtful decisions to construct a balanced and formidable squad.
Flower noted that the team moved away from their traditional focus on acquiring star batters and instead prioritised the importance of building a solid bowling unit.
“The auction was a significant first step, and it’s crucial to get it right. From the start, one of Mo Bobat’s core philosophies was to distribute the value more fairly, rather than overspending on high-profile batsmen who, of course, are excellent players. However, we always recognized the need to build a strong bowling attack, and we focused on that goal,” Flower said.
Additionally, he mentioned how the team faced criticism on Day 1 of the auction for not bidding for high-profile players. However, this decision allowed them to secure several key signings on the second day, which ultimately proved beneficial.
“On the first day of the auction, we faced some criticism as people thought we were spending too cautiously instead of making bold investments. But that approach gave us the flexibility to secure great value on the second day. We were able to bring in players like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Krunal Pandya, Tim David, and Romario Shepherd, all of whom became key additions. Also, Suyash Sharma, our young leg-spinner, has performed exceptionally well for us this season,” he added.
RCB’s historic victory was a result of collective effort, demonstrated by the fact that nine different players won the Player of the Match awards throughout the season. Bowlers like Josh Hazlewood (22 wickets), Krunal Pandya (17 wickets), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (17 wickets), Yash Dayal (13 wickets), and Suyash Sharma (8 wickets) played vital roles in the team’s success.
