The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly revised its policy regarding player replacements for the remainder of the IPL 2025. All 10 franchises are now allowed to sign temporary replacements for the rest of the tournament. Previously, the rules permitted player replacements only in cases of injury or illness before a team’s 12th league match.
This change comes as the IPL 2025 is set to resume on May 17, following a one-week suspension due to military tensions between India and Pakistan. The BCCI made this adjustment to address challenges related to player availability, particularly for overseas cricketers who are unavailable due to national duties, personal reasons, or injuries.
The updated policy states that players signed as temporary replacements during the IPL season will not be eligible for retention ahead of the 2026 auction. These players must re-enter the auction if they want to return.
As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the IPL informed franchises in a memo: “Due to the unavailability of some foreign players because of national duties, personal reasons, or any injury or illness, temporary replacement players will be permitted for the remainder of this edition. However, it is important to note that these Temporary Replacement players will not be eligible for retention in the next season.”
However, replacements who were signed before the suspension, like Sediqullah Atal, Mayank Agarwal, Nandre Burger, and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, are exempted from this rule and can be retained.
Jake Fraser-McGurk, who was bought by Delhi Capitals for INR 9 crore, has confirmed that he will not return for the rest of the season. Mustafizur Rahman will take his place for Rs INR crore. Although Rahman is returning for a third stint with DC, he won’t be eligible for retention under the new guidelines.
This rule change aims to give teams more flexibility toward the end of the season while ensuring clear planning for future squad composition.
