OnĀ a drama-filled evening at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi CapitalsĀ prevailed over Rajasthan Royals in a Super Over to notch up its fifth win in six matches in the IPLās 18th edition.
In the Super Over, Royals batted first and made 11 off Mitchell Starcās five deliveries while losing Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal to run outs.Ā Capitals got the job done when Tristan Stubbs pulled Sandeep Sharma for six off the fourth delivery.
That the match reached a frenetic tie-breaker was down to both teams making 188 in theĀ allotted 20 overs.
With RR needing two runs off the last ball in a chase of 189, Dhruv Jurel flicked Starcās full delivery to Axar Patel at deep midwicket. But having timed his shot too well, he was run out trying to get back for the second run. Starc was brilliant right through the 20th over, landing the ballĀ nearĀ the blockhole and making it difficult forĀ Jurel and Shimron HetmyerĀ to score a boundary.
Before that, Nitish Rana and Jaiswal had impressed with half-centuries.Ā Rana took the charge after Jaiswalās dismissalĀ by Kuldeep Yadav. At the start of the 15th over, bowled by Axar, Royals needed another 73 runs from 36 balls.
Rana made the most of the match-up by hitting the left-arm spinner for two fours and a six. In the next over, Rana dispatched a long hop from Kuldeep over deep midwicket for six.Ā It tookĀ a searing yorker from StarcĀ to trap Rana leg-before.
Jaiswal began the chaseĀ byĀ dictatingĀ termsĀ againstĀ Starc. InĀ the AustralianāsĀ second over, 19 runs were added to RRās total as JaiswalĀ cut, pulledĀ and slogged across the lineĀ with disdain.
For Capitals to reach 188 for five, Axar and Stubbs producedĀ a fewĀ lustyĀ blows in theĀ final five overs.Ā On aĀ deckĀ where hitting through the line didnāt seem all that easyĀ in the initial stages, Abishek Porel and K.L. RahulĀ took 57 balls to put togetherĀ 63 runs for the third wicket.
The spark came from the lower middle-order, helping the host add 77 runs in the last five overs. The final over by Sandeep went for 19 runs, with the medium-pacerās four wides and a no-ball resulting in the over spanning 11 deliveries.
