Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has said he will not give his name in the IPL 2026 auction, choosing the Pakistan Super League. He announced on Saturday, 29 November, two weeks before the IPL auction in Abu Dhabi, marking a major shift for one of the top performers in the IPL.
De Plessis, who played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2013, performed exceptionally well for the team and became their key player and was lauded for contributions in the batting and fielding departments. He was associated with CSK for seven seasons before following MS Dhoni to the Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017.
He scored 633 for Chennai in 2021. Faf was released by CSK before the 2022 mega auction, allowing the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to bring him on board, and he was handed the captain’s armband for three years. The right-handed batter accumulated 730 runs for RCB in 2023. In 2025, he joined the Delhi Capitals, scoring 202 runs in nine games.
He posted 4,773 runs at an average of 35.10 and a strike rate of 135.79 in 154 matches across 14 IPL seasons.
“After 14 seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year,” he wrote. “This league has been a massive part of my journey. I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, for amazing franchises, and in front of fans whose passion is like nothing else.
“Fourteen years is a long time, and I’m proud of what this chapter has meant to me. India has a special place in my heart, and this certainly isn’t goodbye — you’ll see me again,” he wrote.
“This year, I’ve chosen to take on a new challenge and will be playing in the upcoming PSL season. A new country. A new environment. A new challenge. I’m looking forward to the Pakistan hospitality,” he added.
He will now focus on the PSL, where he represented Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators in the past.
