Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially withdrawn from the IPL 2026 auction, marking a major shift in his franchise cricket journey. Maxwell announced his decision through an emotional Instagram post, expressing gratitude for the many years he spent playing in one of the world’s biggest T20 leagues. His exit comes less than a year after he fractured his finger during the 2025 season.
Maxwell shared that stepping away was a difficult but thoughtful decision, reflecting on the unforgettable teammates, passionate fans and incredible cricketing atmosphere he experienced over the years. He emphasised that the IPL shaped him both as a cricketer and a person, and that the memories of playing in India will always stay with him. His statement highlighted how deeply the league influenced his career.

His name was notably missing from the long list of players shortlisted for the upcoming mini-auction in Abu Dhabi, where 77 total slots — including 31 overseas — will be available across teams. Franchises still have until December 3 to submit additional names and must finalise their choices by December 5. Maxwell’s absence has surprised many teams who expected him to remain an option despite his recent injury.

During the 2025 season, Maxwell managed only 78 runs and took 4 wickets across 9 matches before being ruled out with a fractured middle finger. His underwhelming performance led Punjab Kings to release him ahead of the next season. Although renowned as the “Big Show” for his explosive batting, he has struggled to consistently meet expectations in recent years, despite standout seasons such as 2014 and 2021.

Maxwell debuted in the IPL in 2012 and delivered several memorable campaigns, including 542 runs in 2014, 513 runs in 2021 and multiple impactful seasons with RCB. He was released ahead of the 2025 mega auction and later picked by Punjab Kings for Rs 4.20 crore. However, with form and fitness concerns, he has opted to step back from the upcoming edition. Meanwhile, fellow stars Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali have chosen to participate in the Pakistan Super League next year, skipping the IPL auction as well.
