How Mumbai Indians Stole Delhi Capitals' Ticket To Playoffs In IPL 2025 – News18
Two teams, one floundering on the bottom of the IPL points table after their first five matches, the other, cruising away to glory, sitting gleefully on top after their first five. Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals wrote two contrasting tales in the past two months of IPL 2025. Their respective journeys collided on the exciting Wednesday evening.
A win for Mumbai Indians at their home ground meant a direct flight to the playoffs. And a victory for Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium promised twist in the tale, but it weren’t to be. Batting first, Mumbai Indians were heading to a below-par score before Suryakumar Yadav (73* off 43) and Naman Dhir (24* off 8) instilled a new life in the camp. But was having 180/5 on the scoreboard enough? As the night progressed, we learned that it was sufficient. Delhi Capitals, in their response, could only gather 121 runs on the board, falling short by 59 runs. Three-fors from Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah closed the chapter on Delhi Capitals’ IPL campaign.
That Mumbai Indians have reached the tail end of IPL 2025 is in itself a fascinating story. Stick around to find out why.

Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, kicked off their IPL 2025 expedition with two losses.
CSK Vs MI
Their opener against Chennai Super Kings was a low-scoring match. MI managed 155 for 9. In response, CSK crawled to the target but emerged as the winning side, taking victory home by 4 wickets.
GT vs MI
Gujarat Titans register a comfortable win at home against Mumbai Indians. Shubman Gill’s side posted a formidable 196 for 8. MI, in their response, fell 36 runs short. MI’s scorecard read 160 for 6.
Returning from back-to-back defeats, Mumbai Indians appeared to have found their mojo back. Kolkata Knight Riders had a horror show at the Wankhede. Bowled out for a mere 116 inside 17 overs, MI’s Ryan Rickelton, with his unbeaten 62 off 41 balls, helped the home side reach the target with 43 balls to spare.
Just when Mumbai fans thought their team had found their winning ways, Mumbai Indians posted two losses on the trot, again. In their fourth match against Lucknow Super Giants, MI fell short by 12 runs. After having 203 for 8 on the board, LSG held their nerve. MI mustered up 191 for 5 in the otherwise thrilling contest at Lucknow’s home ground.
MI faltered again in a high-scoring game. Playing their fifth contest, MI once again fell short of target by 12 runs. This loss hurt even more as they responded with over 200 runs while chasing Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 221 for 5. MI tried really hard but they could only manage 209 for 9 in their 20 overs. Wankhede watches in disbelief.

RR Vs MI
Mumbai Indians flexed their muscles in Jaipur as they demolished Rajasthan Royals in a one-sided affair. MI piled up 217 for 2 in 20 overs. RR, in their response, disappointed the home crowd as they lost the contest by 100 runs.
Table toppers Gujarat Titans brought Mumbai Indians’ ruthless winning streak to an end. The rain-affected match was full of drama and the calendar was flipped as the match resumed well past midnight. The Wankhede crowd was optimistic, though. Gujarat Titans still required 15 in one over, after all. Rahul Tewatia and Arshad Khan saw them through on the last ball for a three-wicket win. Everyone was stunned.
