A rampant Mumbai Indians will present a stern test of character for a rattled Punjab Kings in a virtual semifinal when the two teams face off in Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League in Ahmedabad on Sunday (June 1, 2025).
An eight-wicket hammering at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a one-sided Qualifier 1 may have eroded some amount of confidence in Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings, who are now in a do-or-die situation as they dream of winning a maiden IPL trophy.
On the other hand, Mumbai Indians took another stride towards a potential sixth title with a comprehensive victory, which knocked out title favourites Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator.

History tells Mumbai Indians know their way around these lanes of IPL knockouts better than either of the other two teams left in the competition and that certainly tilt the scales in favour of Hardik Pandya’s side.
But coach Mahela Jayawardene’s challenge would be to keep his troops organised which the former Sri Lankan captain has been able to do exceedingly well after taking over a side that finished at the bottom in the previous season.

In an era long gone by, Afghanistan’s left-arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad would have walked away with the Purple Cap for being the highest wicket-taker at the conclusion of the league phase of the Indian Premier League. Noor might still do so – he leads this year’s race with 24 wickets despite his team, Chennai Super Kings, propping up the table for the first time in the tournament’s history – but if Prasidh Krishna continues his red-hot form, he will get at least one opportunity to build on his tally of 23 wickets when Gujarat Titans take on Mumbai Indians in Friday’s Eliminator in Mullanpur.

Tom Haines’ fighting unbeaten 171 helped England Lions to recover from a Mukesh Kumar burst and reach 413 for five against India A at tea on the third of the four-day Unofficial Test on Sunday .
Haines stitched an 87-run partnership with equally feisty Dan Mousley (48 batting) for the unbroken sixth wicket to reduce the deficit to 144 runs.
In the middle passage of play, the India A bowlers lost their sting that they showed in the first session and failed to pick up even a single wicket.
Haines, who played out 271 balls so far, and Mousley, who has played three ODIs and four T20Is for England after making his debut last year, blunted the Indian attack with a perfect mix of caution and aggression.
Their vigilance helped England to recover from a rather shaky 333 for five at lunch after Mukesh ousted three Lions’ batters in quick succession.
The pacer was rewarded with three wickets of Holden (101, 101b), Lions’ skipper James Rew (8) and Rehan Ahmed (3) for his improved lengths in the opening session.
The start of the Indian Premier League’s Qualifier 2 between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings on Sunday (June 1, 2025) was delayed due to passing showers.
While there is no imminent threat of rain, passing showers may impact the proceedings of the virtual semifinal.

Pacer Mukesh Kumar struck three quick blows as India A staged a fine comeback despite Max Holden’s eighth first-class hundred, as England Lions stumbled to 333 for five at lunch on the penultimate day of the four-day Unofficial Test here on Sunday.
Overnight centurion Tom Haines (142, 208 balls) is still out there and Dan Mousley (2) is keeping him company at the break. The Lions are now trailing by 224 runs.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team reaching the finals of Indian Premier League (IPL) finals and the final match being played on Tuesday (June 3), has come as a blessing in disguise for the restobars and pubs in Bengaluru as most of them are expecting two or three times more than usual footfall on the day.
“On a regular Tuesday, our footfall is only around 350–400 covers. But on the final day, we are expecting at least 700–800 people as we do not have any cover charge and are open to all,” said Vinay Chandrashekhar, partner at Long Boat Brewing Co, Marathahalli.
Alister Braganza, Senior Regional Business Manager, South, Impressario which owns SOCIAL, which has multiple outlets in the City, said that the footfall on Tuesday is expected to be three times more than a regular weekday. “We were filled across outlets on the day of Qualifier match itself. The crowd is going to be even higher for finals,” he said.
To enhance the match viewing experience, most restaurants in the City have decided to erect gaint LED screens on their premises, introduce some new items on the menu, play popular Kannada songs, distributing sparklers and some are even organising face painting and such activities.
“We are putting up 8 feet by 12 feet LED screen in a special area which can be viewed from both the floors,” Mr. Chandrashekhar shared. He also said that a 32-inch pizza has also been introduced as large groups of people are expected to gather on the day.

Mumbai Indians (MI) star batter Suryakumar Yadav is just 15 runs away from surpassing AB de Villiers to become the non-opener batter with the most runs in a single edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) will be battling for a place in the title clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during the Qualifier two at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on June 1, 2025. A tinge of despondency was writ large on B. Sai Sudharsan’s face as he walked into the press conference hall of the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium for the post-match formalities on Friday. The 23-year-old had put every ounce of effort, smashing a breathtaking 80 for Gujarat Titans in a chase of 229 against Mumbai Indians in the IPL Eliminator. But it wasn’t enough.
This was an IPL season where the Tamil Nadu batter entrenched his status as a prodigious talent. The southpaw is the tournament’s highest run-getter, compiling 759 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 156.17. But he admitted that his team faltering at this stage will rankle.

If there was a blueprint for Royal Challengers Bengaluru after opting to bowl in IPL’s Qualifier 1, it would have been pretty similar to how things transpired at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium on Thursday (May 29, 2025). Almost everything that the RCB bowlers did fell into place as Punjab Kings’ catastrophic explosion with the bat saw it folding up for 101 in 14.1 overs. Josh Hazlewood and Suyash Sharma starred with three scalps each.
