IPL 2025: How will the KKR vs PBKS washout impact the playoff scenario and who will benefit? – Firstpost

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is heating up as the race to the playoffs is getting tighter. In the middle of all this, the match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) getting washed out has added a new twist to the points table.
The KKR vs PBKS game on Saturday was abandoned due to rainfall in Kolkata, which saw both teams securing a point each. Batting first, Punjab posted a mammoth total of 201/4 in 20 overs thanks to brilliant knocks from Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh.
PBKS looked well on track to win the game after the huge total in their first innings. However, the rain gods had other plans for the Shreyas Iyer-led side as the match was abandoned without a result, forcing them to settle for just one point instead.
So, let’s take a look at how the washout will affect the playoff chances and which teams will gain from it.
Because of the washout, both KKR and PBKS have shared one point each. With this extra point, PBKS have now moved up to fourth place on the points table with 11 points from 9 matches. They have gone ahead of Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who both have 10 points.
But in the bigger picture, this washout could actually hurt PBKS. They needed a win to feel safe in the playoff race. Now, teams like Gujarat Titans (GT), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are all ahead of them with 12 points and they still have matches left. If MI, LSG, or even RCB win their next matches, PBKS could easily slip out of the top 4.
For KKR, the situation is even worse. They now have 7 points from 9 matches and are sitting in 7th place. They needed every point they could get to stay alive in the race for the playoffs. Sharing points with PBKS doesn’t help them much and could leave them at a big disadvantage in the coming weeks.
Also, RCB, who have already played nine matches, will be slightly happier with this result. The washout has given them a little breathing space over PBKS in the battle for the fourth playoff spot.
