The final puzzle piece of the IPL 2025 playoff picture has fallen into place. Mumbai Indians, with their trademark late-season flourish, stormed into the playoffs after a dominant victory over Delhi Capitals, sealing the fourth and final qualification spot.
The five-time champions now join Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings in the business end of the tournament — a stage set to unravel at Mullanpur and, possibly, Ahmedabad.

Top Two: Where the Real Advantage Lies
But even with the four playoff teams confirmed, the real drama is just beginning. The equation is still wide open for a coveted top-two finish — a lifeline that offers an additional shot at reaching the grand finale.
In the IPL format, finishing in the top two is more than just a prestige tag; it means a shorter, less treacherous route to the final. Qualifier 1 sees the top two face off, with the winner booking a direct berth in the final, while the loser gets another opportunity in Qualifier 2.
Hence, every ball in the final league fixtures now carries added weight.

Gujarat Titans, currently perched at the top, are in pole position to stay there. With two games in hand, a single win could be enough to seal a top-two finish, though winning both would make their place at the summit unassailable.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru, breathing down Gujarat’s neck, are also two matches away from determining their own fate. Victories in both could secure a top-two spot, but even then, they will be reliant on Titans faltering in at least one match.
Punjab Kings remain the most precariously placed of the top contenders. They need more than just two wins; they need a stroke of luck. For PBKS to sneak into the top two, they must win both remaining games and hope Bengaluru lose at least once.
Even then, net run rate could be the final judge.
Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, have the narrowest path to a top-two finish. Their hopes hinge on defeating Punjab Kings in their last match and praying for RCB to lose both remaining games and Punjab to falter against Delhi. It’s a slim chance, but if there’s one side known to thrive in chaos, it’s MI.
As the league phase of IPL 2025 enters its final days, every result, every run, every over holds the power to tilt the playoff dynamics. The stage is set, the stakes are sky-high, and the race to the summit is far from over.
