IPL 2025 playoffs qualification scenarios: What each team needs to do to stay alive – Firstpost

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is all set to resume on Saturday, 17 May, a week after it was suspended due to the India-Pakistan conflict. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in the opening game of the restart.
With Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) already out of the tournament, seven teams are still fighting for the four available playoff spots. Only five teams have a realistic chance. A total of 13 league matches are left and every game from now on is crucial.
The playoffs will be held from 29 May to 3 June. Here’s how each of the seven teams can qualify for the final stage of the tournament.
GT are currently at the top of the points table with eight wins in 11 matches. They have 16 points to their name. Their remaining matches are scheduled against Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings.
To qualify, they need just one win in the last three matches. That will take GT to 18 points, which should be enough for a top-4 finish.
To finish in Top 2, GT must win all three matches to reach 22 points. Only Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) can also reach 22, so GT will likely be in the top two if they win all remaining matches.
RCB are also sitting on eight wins in 11 matches, level on 16 points with Gujarat Titans. Their last three fixtures are against Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants.
To qualify, RCB need just one win in the last three games to reach 18 points, which should secure a playoff spot.
To finish in Top 2, RCB must win all three matches to get to 22 points. Only GT can also reach that total, so winning all remaining games should guarantee RCB a top-two finish. NRR will then decide who takes the number one position.
PBKS have won seven out of their 11 matches so far and have 15 points. Their remaining fixtures are against Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.
To qualify, PBKS must win at least two out of their last three matches. That will take them to 19 points, which should be enough for a top-4 finish.
To finish in Top 2, PBKS must win all three matches to reach 21 points. For that to happen, they’ll also need GT or RCB to drop points.
Mumbai Indians have won seven out of 12 matches and currently have 14 points. Their last two games are against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings.
To qualify, MI need to win both of their remaining matches to reach 18 points. That will likely be enough to make it to the playoffs.
To finish in Top 2, MI must win both matches and finish on 18 points with a very strong Net Run Rate. They will also need GT, RCB and PBKS to lose at least two games each.
Delhi Capitals have six wins in 11 games and are on 13 points. Their remaining matches are against Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings.
To qualify, DC must win all three of their remaining matches. That will take them to 19 points and should secure a playoff spot.
If they lose one game, especially to MI or PBKS, they may finish on 17 and depend heavily on NRR and other results.
KKR have 11 points from 12 matches, with five wins and one no-result. Their last two games are against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
To qualify, KKR must win both their remaining matches to get to 15 points. Even then, they will need several other results to go their way.
LSG have 10 points in 11 matches with five wins. They still have matches left against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
To qualify, LSG need to win all three remaining matches to reach 16 points. Even then, qualification will depend on Net Run Rate and how PBKS, DC and MI perform.
