March 22, 2025: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) head coach Andy Flower has expressed optimism about the spin-bowling options available to his team in IPL 2025, with a special mention for young wrist spinner Suyash Sharma. Flower, while addressing the media in a pre-match press conference, emphasized the excitement surrounding Suyash, who made his IPL debut for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2023.
Suyash, 21, was bought by RCB for INR 2.60 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, and Flower believes the youngster has great potential, even though the team doesn’t expect him to instantly live up to the legendary status of Shane Warne.
“Suyash is a very exciting young prospect with limited experience, but has a really high ceiling. We are looking for great things from him, but none of us know exactly how he’s going to go in a full IPL season. Every young player starts off that way,” Flower shared with the reporters.
Despite the high hopes from the young spinner, Flower called for patience. He pointed out that Suyash had recently undergone groin surgery, which had been a long-standing injury problem. The recovery has gone well, and Flower emphasized that RCB had provided him with excellent care during the off-season.
“We’re hoping for great things from him. But we are also not expecting him to be, you know, Shane Warne from the off,” Flower added, signaling that while they have high expectations, Suyash’s development will take time.
In addition to Suyash, Flower highlighted another promising uncapped spinner, Mohit Rathee, as a backup for the spin department. Flower acknowledged that the team has depth in the spin-bowling department with experienced cricketers such as Swapnil Singh, who was effective for RCB last season, and all-rounder Liam Livingstone, who can provide backup with his spin options.

“It’s good that he’s got these experienced cricketers around him and a captain he’ll be comfortable working with. Having Liam Livingstone as backup in the spin department is quite a nice insurance to have. So, we’re comfortable with where we are,” Flower said.
RCB has a history of strong leg-spinners in their lineup, including Yuzvendra Chahal, who remains the team’s highest wicket-taker in IPL history, having claimed 139 wickets from 2014 to 2021. The team also briefly had Adam Zampa as part of their squad. Now, with Suyash Sharma, RCB hopes to add another spin option to the arsenal.
Suyash had an impressive debut IPL season in 2023, claiming 10 wickets at an average of 32.10 and an economy rate of 8.23 runs per over despite being part of a packed spin-bowling lineup at KKR. RCB is hopeful that Suyash’s talent can translate into consistent performances in IPL 2025, with Flower urging both patience and support for the young spinner as he learns and grows throughout the season.
With RCB’s solid spin options and the backing of their experienced coaching staff, the team will look to make a mark in the 2025 edition of the IPL, hoping that Suyash Sharma’s potential shines through as part of their spin strategy.
