The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 was suspended on Friday following heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan.
Here is a timelime of events that led to the suspension:
Terrorists open fire at tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, killing 26 civilians, 25 of which are Indian nationals.
India carries out ‘focused strikes’ on nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, targeting the roots of cross-border terror planning.
Several airports across northern India, including Dharamsala, shut down as tensions escalate between India and Pakistan. The IPL 2025 game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, to be held a day later, is on schedule.
Pakistan attempts to engage a number of military targets in northern and western India using drones and missiles, which are effectively neutralised by India’s armed forces. In response, India targets Air Defence Radars and systems in various locations in Pakistan and neutralises the Lahore Air Defence System.

The Pakistan Cricket Board reschedules the Pakistan Super League match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings. The match was scheduled to start at 7:30 pm IST at the Rawalpindi Stadium.
Meanwhile, the IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala starts an hour late due to rain. Punjab wins the toss, bats first and scores 122 for no loss in 10.1 overs.
Military stations at Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur targeted by Pakistani-origin drones and missiles along the International Border in J&K. The Indian armed forces successfully repel the attacks.
Tensions escalate further, leading to blackouts in multiple parts of northern and western India.
One of the floodlights at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association goes off. That number rises to three, and players walk off the field. Spectators are evacuated, and the match is eventually called off due to a ‘technical failure’.
The BCCI suspends the IPL for a week with immediate effect. In its communication to the teams, the BCCI specifies that the ‘season is temporarily suspended’, without clarifying the future course of action. It also arranges chartered flights for the safe return of overseas players.
Meanwhile, the PCB decides to shift the remaining matches of the ongoing PSL to the United Arab Emirates.
