IPL 2025: Who is Urvil Patel joining Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for Vansh Bedi? – Trade Brains

Urvil Mukesh Patel born on 17 October 1998 in Mehsana, Gujarat, is quickly becoming one of the most explosive wicketkeeper-batters in Indian domestic cricket. Patel stands 5 feet 8 inches, began his cricketing journey in the cricketing heartlands of Gujarat, honing his skills in Palanpur, a city known for its diamonds- which is a fitting analogy for a player who many believe is one of the brightest diamonds to come from the city. 
Patel started his career with Baroda. He made his first T20 in January 2018 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He made his List A in February 2018 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Patel moved to Gujarat before the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season. Over the next two seasons, he became a reliable wicketkeeper and a good middle-order batsman.
Patel made his first-class debut in the 2023-24 season of the Ranji Trophy and gained popularity shortly in the domestic league. Patel made 140 runs off 197 balls for Saurashtra in February 2025. Patel was just the second Indian, after Sreyas Iyer, to make a century in all the domestic forms of the game in the same season.
Patel’s first national game was in November 2024 during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He made headlines when he smashed a 28-ball century against Tripura, the fastest by an Indian in T20 and second fastest in the world, but fell one ball short of the record. Patel stunned everyone with 113 not out from 35 balls, with 12 sixes and 7 fours.
Patel guided Gujarat to another victory, smashing Rishabh Pant’s previous Indian T20 record by four balls. Patel was back in the news in November 2023 when he made a century off 41 balls against Arunachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This was the second-quickest List A hundred by an Indian at the time. He became the first player to make two Twenty20 hundreds in under 40 balls in December 2024. This made Patel a game-changing legend.
Patel was first acquired by the Gujarat Titans for Rs. 20 lakhs ahead of the IPL 2023 season, however he did not receive any playing time. He went unsold in the IPL auction prior to IPL 2025, but following impressive achievements in the 2024 season, Patel was a name that could not be ignored. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) signed him in May 2025 due to Vansh Bedi’s injury for the balance of the IPL season, paying him INR 30 lakh as his basic price.
A right-handed batsman and athletic keeper, Patel is labeled as aggressive with great intent, clean hitting, and the ability to win games on his own. His range from ball one and his propensity to deliver on the big occasion makes him a sought-after player in the shortest form. Outside of cricket, Patel is known for his calmness and love of music and travel. His coach Prakash Patni at the PCCC Academy group taught him a great deal that shaped his career.
Urvil Patel is only 26 years of age, so he has just begun his journey. With his strong combination of power, flair and consistency, Patel is capable of making an impact for CSK in IPL 2025 and potentially at higher levels of Indian cricket too.
