On Monday, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court, requesting the dismissal of the criminal case lodged against them following the stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. The tragic incident led to the deaths of 11 people and left many others injured.
The FIR, which contains charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and criminal negligence, was registered after the overcrowding incident during a public event marking RCB’s first IPL title win.
The DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt Ltd, the company that organised the event, has also submitted a separate petition to contest the FIR filed against it. Royal Challengers Sports Limited (RCSL), the entity that owns RCB, maintains that it has been wrongly implicated in the case.
In its legal petition, RCSL explained that it had made it clear on social media that only a limited number of passes were being issued. It also mentioned that pre-registration was required for access, even for those with free tickets.
RCSL further pointed out that the stadium gates, which were meant to open at 1:45 pm, were actually opened at 3 pm, which caused the crowd to surge. According to the event management company, the incident resulted from inadequate crowd control by the police.
