The countdown has officially begun for one of the most important dates in the IPL calendar. The IPL 2026 retention deadline is scheduled for November 15, 2025, with all ten franchises required to submit their final list of retained and released players to the BCCI.
With the deadline approaching, franchises such as Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Mumbai Indians (MI) are drawing considerable attention. Several trades have already been completed.
Shardul Thakur was traded from LSG to MI, Sherfane Rutherford moved from Gujarat Titans to MI. However, the loudest trade surrounds the potential Sanju Samson–Ravindra Jadeja + Sam Curran mega trade. If approved by the BCCI, this deal between CSK and RR could become one of the biggest trades in IPL history.
Having said this, in this article, let’s take a look at all the important details about IPL 2026 retention.
The upcoming season will not feature a mega auction. Instead, the IPL will conduct a mini-auction, giving franchises greater control over their existing squads. Franchises can freely decide which players to hold or release based on budget and strategy.
Here are the key rules:
The IPL 2026 retention deadline is set for 5 PM IST on Saturday, November 15, when all ten teams are supposed to submit their list of retained and released players to the BCCI.
Star Sports is the official broadcaster of the IPL. The IPL 2026 retention show will be telecast live on Star Sports 2, for Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. Fans can also enjoy live streaming on the JioStar app and website.
The IPL 2026 mini-auction will take place on December 16 in Abu Dhabi, marking the second consecutive year of the auction being hosted overseas. In 2024, the IPL 2025 auction was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
