IPL tickets get costlier with 40% GST, while moviegoers enjoy cheaper entry – financialexpress.com

If you are a cricket enthusiast, some bad news for you. The IPL match tickets are going to be costlier under the new GST rate structure. However, if it’s films that you are keen to watch, you are in for a treat as movie tickets are set to be charged lower GST at 5% from 12% earlier
The government has increased the GST rates on IPL tickets to 40 per cent from 28 per cent. The sharp increase in the GST on IPL tickets has now put the mega cricketing event at par with other events such as casinos and race clubs. With GST on IPL tickets now at 40%, the basic Rs 1,000 ticket will cost Rs 1,400 on average. 
The Government, on its part, clarified its stance on the tax on IPL and said that “admission to sporting events like IPL will attract 40% GST, However, this rate of 40% will not apply to admission to recognised sporting events.
The next question then is what would be the GST on sporting events other than IPL? The Government FAQ on GST clarifies that, “Admission to other sporting events, including recognised sporting events where the ticket price is not more than Rs 500, continues to be exempt, and if the ticket price is more than Rs 500, it continues to be taxed at the standard rate of 18%.”

BCCI generates over half of its total revenue from IPL alone. In FY24, BCCI generated a total income of Rs 9,741 crore. The year before that, the board’s total income stood at Rs 6,558 crore.
In FY24, BCCI’s 59 per cent of income came from IPL alone. The board generated a total income of Rs 5,761 crore from IPL. 
The government has also made changes in the GST rates for movie tickets. The movie tickets, which were priced under Rs 100 earlier, attracted a GST rate of 12 per cent. As the 12 per cent GST slab is eliminated by the government, the movie tickets under Rs 100 will now attract a  GST of 5 per cent. 
GST rates for movie tickets that are priced above Rs 100 remain unchanged under the revised tax rates. The movie tickets priced above Rs 100 earlier attracted 18 per cent GST rates and will be taxed at the same rate under the new slabs also.
