Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Hemang Badani remarked that releasing Faf du Plessis was a tough decision, but they had to take it in order to move to a younger player. The former South Africa cricketer had played just one season for the Delhi-based franchise before being released. He finished IPL 2025 with a total of 202 runs under his name from nine games, scoring two half-centuries.
“It’s never easy to release a player of Faf du Plessis’ caliber. Letting him go was a really tough decision because he has been a stellar performer in the IPL for many years,” Badani said during the ‘IPL Retention’ show on Jiostar.
“But we felt it was time to move towards a younger option, someone who could bring a more aggressive style that fits the brand of cricket we want to play,” he added.

After being released by DC, du Plessis decided to shockingly withdraw his name from the IPL 2026 auction. He shared a social media post, confirming that he won’t be entering the upcoming mini-auction and will rather be playing the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Du Plessis played a total of 13 seasons in the IPL, featuring for four different franchises. He did achieve success in the tournament and won the IPL title twice with the Chennai Super Kings. He is nothing short of a legend for the franchise and has played several meorable knocks for them in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Badani also opened up on DC’s decision to release explosive Australia batter Jake Fraser-McGurk ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction. The 23-year-old played two seasons for the franchise before being released. He had a disappointing IPL 2025 and finished with just 55 runs from six games.
“With Jake Fraser-McGurk, we backed him based on his performance last season, but at nine crore, we didn’t feel we got enough value from that investment. So, we felt it was best to let him go as well. Overall, we are quite pleased with the squad we have right now,” Badani stated.
