Rohit finally converts his positive start at the Wankhede Stadium today, bringing up his first half-century of the season and his 44th overall in the IPL with a single off Ashwin’s bowling a the end of the 12th over! He showed glimpses of regaining his form in his previous outing, against SRH at home, and ends his lean patch against arch-rivals and fellow five-time champions CSK, also at his home ground. The former MI captain has struck two fours and four sixes along the way.
Surya, meanwhile, moves into the 30s in quick time, smashing Jadeja for a six and a four in the left-arm spinner’s third over, in which 13 runs are added to the Mumbai total. MI 112/1 after 12; need 65 off 48
After the pull shot off Overton, Rohit opts for the pick-up shot in Khaleel’s second over, with the ball once again landing in the stands, this time slightly behind square.
Rohit collects two fours in the next three balls – while the first one’s caressed through the gap between cover and extra cover, the ‘Hitman’ nearly perishes in the penultimate ball of the over by chipping it towards mid off.
Thankfully for him, the ball lands in the gap before rolling away for a boundary. MI 35/0 after 3
Boult leaks 16 runs in the final over of the Chennai innings to finish wicketless for 43 runs, with Jadeja smashing the Kiwi left-arm pacer for a six and a four in successive deliveries to bring up his first half-century of the season and only his fourth overall!
CSK struggling at the halfway stage of the innings with just 70 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets. Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja’s fifties, however, has greatly boosted their hopes of completing a season-double against MI.
Brilliant comeback by star pacer Bumrah after conceding 10 in his second over, conceding just three runs while getting the much-needed wicket of the well-set Dube, who is caught by Will Jacks at deep midwicket while attempting to smash a slower ball bowled along fuller length out of the park.
Out walks MS Dhoni at No 6, getting welcomed by the roar that he gets regardless of whether he’s playing at Chepauk or away from home. CSK 145/4 after 17
Left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar, meanwhile, concedes 24 runs in his second over. The youngster gets smashed for back-to-back maximums by Dube, with Bumrah parrying the ball over the rope at fine leg while attempting to collect a tough catch. Jadeja too shifts gears, collecting a four at the start of the over and ending it with a mighty hit down the ground.
CSK should easily cross 180 from this position and can even try and target 200.
Bumrah concedes 10 in his second over, with Jadeja capitalising on a poor delivery by pulling a short ball down leg towards the fine leg fence. That is followed by Dube collecting two sixes in as many overs, smashing a full delivery from Pandya over deep midwicket before completing fifty of the partnership with Jadeja by whipping a low full toss from Boult over fine leg in the following over.
Pandya and Boult concede 11 and 15 runs respectively in their most recent overs, with Chennai collecting 36 in their last three. CSK 118/3 after 15
Pandya decides to finally introduce Jasprit Bumrah in the ninth over, with the pace spearhead conceding just three singles first up. Will Jacks bowls his first over on the other side of the strategic timeout, conceding just four including a brace to Jadeja in the final delivery.
‘Jaddu’ is currently batting on a run-a-ball 9 while Shivam Dube has collected just two runs in seven deliveries. CSK desperately need a move-on if they are to post a competitive total tonight.
Santner concedes just four singles in the first five balls of his second over, which forces Rasheed to try and attack the left-arm spinner in the final delivery.
The Kiwi spinner gives the ball a bit more air while subtly shortening the length to beat the right-handed batter’s outside edge, resulting in a stumping. CSK 63/3 after 8
It’s been quite the season for youngsters, especially those making their maiden appearance in the world’s biggest T20 league, and Mumbai’s very own Mhatre is the latest of those making a solid impression in the ongoing season.
The 17-year-old opens his account with a single after Ashwani gets Ravindra caught-behind, before smashing the ball down the ground to collect only the second boundary of the innings. That is followed by back-to-back sixes in the next two deliveries, targeting the midwicket and square leg regions.
He doesn’t appear to care about Deepak Chahar’s reputation either as he hits the senior pacer for a four in the following over, with nine runs coming from the fifth over. Can Mhatre convert this promising start into a big score tonight? CSK 43/1 after 5

The ‘Hitman’ has been having a lean run so far in the 18th IPL season, scoring 82 runs in six outings at an average of 13.67, although he has been striking at 143.86.
