Mohammed Shami Opens Up on Comeback, Retirement Talks After England Snub & IPL 2025 Struggles – icccricketschedule.com

Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has openly discussed his cricketing future after being left out of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England and a challenging period in the IPL 2025 with Sunrisers Hyderabad. The seasoned pacer acknowledged that he has been struggling with fitness concerns since his lengthy injury break following the 2023 World Cup, but he clarified that he is not considering any thoughts of retirement.
Shami is prepared to participate in the Duleep Trophy this week, marking his return to the red ball. This tournament could be crucial for his efforts to rejoin the Indian Test squad. However, at the age of 34, the journey for a fast bowler can be tough. Nevertheless, Shami expressed his resolve to keep working diligently and perform to the best of his ability whenever the opportunity arises.

When responding to questions about retirement, Shami provided a firm response. He stated, “If someone has a problem, tell me, if it is like their lives become better if I take retirement. Tell me whose life have I become a rock in that you want me to retire? The day I get bored, I will leave. You don’t pick me, but I will keep working hard. You don’t pick me in international, I will play domestic. I will keep playing somewhere or the other. You have to make these decisions when you start feeling bored. That is not the time for me now.”
He emphasized that even if he is not selected for India, he intends to continue playing in domestic cricket and remain engaged in the sport as long as it brings him joy.
The pacer elaborated on the reasons for his omission from the England series. Shami noted that he lacked complete confidence in his fitness and thought it wise to withdraw rather than perform at a level below what the team demands. He shared that a similar scenario occurred before the Australia series, when bodily discomfort led him to refrain from overstraining himself.
When asked if the selectors had contacted him during the recent squad selections, Shami expressed that he has no grievances. “I have neither blamed anyone nor complained that the selectors should or shouldn’t talk to me. I don’t care about it that much. If I fit into your plans, then select me in the team. If I don’t, then don’t pick me. I have no objections. You fulfill your duties and do what’s best for the nation. I believe that if you give me an opportunity, I will try to do my best,” Shami said.
Looking ahead, Shami indicated that he is putting in the necessary effort for a robust comeback. Competing in the Duleep Trophy will assist him in assessing his fitness for longer formats, and he believes that if he can manage the demands of a five-day match, there should be no questions about his readiness for international play.
