Mumbai and Delhi’s Playoff Chances in IPL 2025 Explained – AP7AM
With a commanding victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday, Gujarat Titans (GT) became the first team to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs. Delhi’s defeat also secured playoff berths for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS). These three teams will now vie for the coveted top-two spots in the points table.
Gujarat Titans emerged as the first team to secure a place in the IPL 2025 playoffs following their win against Delhi Capitals. The team currently holds 18 points, with two matches remaining. If they win both, they could reach 22 points, putting Shubman Gill-led Gujarat in strong contention to finish at the top of the table.
The same victory also paved the way for Royal Challengers Bangalore to qualify for the playoffs. If RCB wins their remaining two matches, they can accumulate up to 21 points. Should Gujarat lose one of their final two matches, RCB has a chance to finish in the top two.
Punjab Kings have also secured their playoff berth. If they win their upcoming two matches and either RCB or Gujarat lose at least one game, the Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab team could claim a top-two position.
Mumbai Indians must win both of their remaining matches to secure a spot in the top four. With 14 points from 12 matches, two more wins would take them to 18 points. Mumbai currently enjoys a healthy net run rate, meaning even a single win might keep their playoff hopes alive, although that scenario depends heavily on the outcomes of other teams’ matches.
Delhi Capitals’ playoff chances became more complicated following their loss to Gujarat. With 13 points from 12 matches, Delhi stands in fifth place. To remain in contention, they must first win their match against Mumbai Indians on May 21. A loss would eliminate them from the race. They must also defeat Punjab Kings in their final match, and Mumbai must lose to Punjab. Only then can Delhi reach 17 points and qualify for the playoffs.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) face an uphill task to reach the playoffs. They must win all of their remaining three matches and rely on favourable outcomes in other teams’ games. Currently placed seventh with 10 points from 11 matches, LSG will be eliminated if they lose their match today against Sunrisers. However, a win would keep their playoff hopes alive.
