The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is on the verge of arriving at its conclusion, with just two more games to go. Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians face off in the first of those two games, in Qualifier 2 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, with the winner of that game then scheduled to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final two days later.

While Ahmedabad has witnessed showers in the build-up to Sunday’s Qualifier 2 between PBKS and MI, the match isn’t expected to witness much interruption with a 9 per cent chance of rain predicted for the evening, as per the forecast on Accuweather. Which means that while there could be interruptions during the game, it isn’t likely to hold play up long enough to lead to reduction of overs.
The IPL Governing Council has allotted up to two hours for the completion of a game in the playoffs if rain does havoc. However, in the event that rain absolutely refuses to relent and ends up washing the game out, then that will mark a heartbreaking end to Mumbai Indians’ campaign and their quest for a sixth IPL title.
Since there isn’t a reserve day for any game other than the final, the upcoming match will be deemed over once it crosses its final cut-off time – which includes the special two-hour extension granted exclusively for playoff games to combat rain delays.
And if the match does end in a washout, the team that had finished higher on the points table at the end of the league phase advances, as per IPL rules. PBKS had finished on top of the table with 19 points while MI had finished fourth, and Shreyas Iyer’s men will thus be rewarded for being the more consistent of the two teams in the league stage.
