Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who returned to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the IPL 2025 season after a long gap, has informed the franchise of his intention to part ways. The 38-year-old, bought for Rs 9.75 crore in the mega auction, endured a disappointing campaign, picking up only seven wickets in nine matches and struggling particularly in the powerplay overs. His dip in form led to him being benched for a few games.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, Ashwin has also decided to step down as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy, a role he has held for the past year. This move is aimed at avoiding a potential conflict of interest should he join another franchise in the future.
While the exact reason for his decision remains unclear, the matter will be finalised after discussions with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and veteran MS Dhoni. CSK officials and the leadership group have been meeting in Chennai over the past few days to plan for the next season.
Ashwin began his IPL career with CSK, spending his first six seasons under Dhoni before moving to other teams between 2016 and 2024, including Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. His 2025 return was expected to be a homecoming boost, but CSK endured their worst-ever campaign, finishing at the bottom of the points table. Injuries to key players, including Gaikwad, saw Dhoni step in as captain midway through the season.
This development follows reports that Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has also requested a release ahead of the 2026 edition. Ashwin’s next step — a trade to another franchise or entry into the mini auction later this year — remains to be seen.
