Shashank Singh on Shreyas Iyer Abusing Him After IPL 2025 Qualifier 2: ‘He Should’ve Slapped Me’
The IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians turned tense when a surprising on-field moment revealed a different side of PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer. Known for his typically composed demeanor, Iyer shocked fans by reacting angrily to teammate Shashank Singh after a crucial mistake in a high-stakes match.
Punjab Kings were chasing a challenging target of 204 and looked to be in a decent position at 169/4 in the 17th over.
That’s when Shashank Singh played a shot off Trent Boult and went for a single.
What seemed like a comfortable run quickly turned into a disaster. Shashank’s slow and casual approach to the non-striker’s end gave Hardik Pandya enough time to grab the ball and strike the stumps directly.
The unexpected run-out left Punjab in shock. Shreyas Iyer, in particular, was visibly furious with Shashank’s lack of urgency during such a critical moment.
Although PBKS managed to win the match with an over remaining, Iyer’s frustration lingered.
After the victory, Iyer declined to shake hands with Shashank and reportedly had harsh words for him on the field.
The incident was caught on camera and quickly spread across social media, showing a side of Iyer that fans weren’t used to seeing.
In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Shashank Singh admitted he deserved the criticism and even made a dramatic statement about it.
“I deserve it, Iyer should have slapped me, my father didn’t speak to me till the finals. I was casual, I was walking on the beach not even in the garden. It was a crucial time, Shreyas was clear that I didn’t expect this from you but later he took me out for dinner,” said Shashank.
His candid confession added context to the emotional aftermath of the game and highlighted the pressure players face in do-or-die matches.
Despite the internal drama, Punjab Kings enjoyed one of their strongest seasons in years under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership and Ricky Ponting’s guidance.
They went on to reach the IPL final but narrowly lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by just six runs.
Still, PBKS earned respect for their performance throughout the tournament and for how the team handled adversity on and off the field.
