Sourav Ganguly in talks with BCCI to keep IPL 2025 final at Eden Gardens – Firstpost
Former Indian cricket captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said he is in regular talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ensure that the final of IPL 2025 stays at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The BCCI has not yet officially confirmed the venues for the IPL 2025 playoffs after the tournament was suspended midway due to rising border tensions between India and Pakistan.
A new schedule was announced by the board recently but the playoffs and final venues remain undecided. As per the revised schedule, the IPL 2025 playoffs are scheduled to begin from 29 May with the final slated to be held on 3 June. The BCCI has said that it will confirm the venues for the playoffs in the coming days.
Before the IPL 2025 was suspended due to security concerns, Kolkata was scheduled to host the IPL 2025 final and the Qualifier 2. But due to possible logistical challenges and concerns about heavy rainfall in Kolkata during this period, the BCCI is considering shifting the matches to some other venue. Ahmedabad is being tipped to host the final but nothing has been confirmed yet.
However, Sourav Ganguly is confident that Eden Gardens will still host the final. In a conversation with news agency PTI, Ganguly revealed that he is in talks with the BCCI to keep the playoff matches in Kolkata. The former BCCI boss also pointed out that the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has a good relationship with the apex body, suggesting it will help in their talks.
“No, no, we’re trying — talking to the BCCI. Is it that easy to shift the final? It’s Eden’s playoffs, and I’m sure everything will be sorted. I’m very hopeful. Protest doesn’t help much. BCCI has a very good relationship with the Cricket Association of Bengal,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI.
The CAB, which manages Eden Gardens in Kolkata, is currently led by Ganguly’s brother Snehasish Ganguly. Eden Gardens was originally awarded the playoff matches because the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the IPL trophy last year.
Meanwhile, the KKR have been knocked out of the IPL 2025 playoff race after their game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) got abandoned due to rain on Saturday. The IPL 2025 restart didn’t go as planned and the pause will continue for now.
Even though KKR are now officially out of the race, fans and CAB officials would still want the playoffs to take place at Eden Gardens. The fans obviously love the sport, while the CAB will hope to earn the big bucks that come with hosting any IPL game.
