Supreme Court adjourns hearing on pleas challenging CEC Election Commissions appointment law ann

The hearing on the petitions challenging the Election Commissioner Appointment Act has been postponed in the Supreme Court. The hearing in detail was not possible on Wednesday (March 19, 2025) due to lack of time. In such a situation, the court postponed the hearing on the request of the petitioner’s counsel. The court has directed to put the case for hearing on 16 April.

Several petitioners including the Association for Democratic Reforms, Lok Prahari and Jaya Thakur have challenged the new law. He has said that in 2023, the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court ordered the Chief Justice, PM and Leader of Opposition to be kept in the committee selecting the Election Commissioner. But the government passed the new law and not keeping the Chief Justice in this committee and gave it to the nominated minister from the PM.

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioner ADR, described the case as associated with the roots of democracy. He said that today the case is far behind in the list of hearing. In such a situation, it does not seem that it can be heard in detail. On this, Justice Surya Kant, who is presiding over the bench of 2 judges, said that he also wants to hear it in detail and settle it.

Prashant Bhushan requested that a date should be given for hearing in which it can be heard for 2-3 hours. On this, the court directed to list the case for hearing on 16 April. Justice Suryakant said that on that day much big cases are not engaged for hearing. In such a situation, it will be possible to listen to this case in detail.
