According to a report published in the Times of India, the players of the Indian team tied a black band on the side during the match. For this, tournament organizers and Asian Hand Ball Association (AHF) threatened to expel Team India from the tournament. The Indian handball team management had considered withdrawing the name from the match due to the ongoing tension with Pakistan, but was forced to play the match due to the threat from AHF.
Play or else a fine of millions
Quoting the Times of India, Anandeshwar Pandey, Executive Director of the Indian Handball Federation, said that according to the rules of the International Handball Federation, the Indian team had boycotted the match against Pakistan, he would have to pay a fine of about Rs 8.5 lakh in Indian currency. Team India could have to face a 2 -year ban along with fine.
Anandeshwar Pandey said, “AHF clearly told us that if the Indian team does not come to play the match then it will also violate the Olympic rules. We had no option left.”
India sought advice
India lost this match 0-2. Before the match was played, the Indian Handball Federation wrote separate letters to the Sports Ministry and the Indian Olympic Association whether Team India should play from Pakistan or not. Anandeshwar Pandey said that there was no quick response from the government and the match time was close. He said that if there was a response from the government, he would have withdrawn the name from the match against Pakistan.
