Why Did PBKS Release Josh Inglis? Ponting Reveals Reason Behind Move – Cricket.com

One of the biggest surprises on November 15 (Saturday) was that the 2025 IPL finalists, Punjab Kings, let go of their key performer, Josh Inglis. The 30-year-old played 11 games for the franchise last year and scored 278 runs at a strike rate of 162.57.
But on November 15, Inglis was released, leading to a huge outcry on social media. However, Punjab’s head coach, Ricky Ponting, offered an update, stating that the 30-year-old won’t be available for the majority of IPL 2026 – which is why they had to release him.
“Josh Inglis is another one who played some great knocks for us in the back half of the tournament," Ponting said on Star Sports, reported News18.
“He missed a few games through the course of the season due to various reasons. He has also made me aware this year that he wasn’t going to be available for the majority of the tournament. So for that reason, I found it pretty much impossible to be able to be able to retain him," the head coach said.
While many suggested that Ponting was never going to let go of experienced all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, the Australian did leave the all-rounder out of the retention list. Maxwell had a lukewarm IPL 2025 season, where he could only score 48 runs in six innings but did have an impact with the ball.
However, Ponting cleared the air stating that the experienced all-rounder won’t be part of the playing XI, and hence he was left out of the setup ahead of IPL 2026 Auction.
“Love Glenn and what he brings to the game. Unfortunately, last year we weren’t able to get the best out of him," Ponting told Star Sports. “Looking ahead to this season, we didn’t feel he would be part of our starting team, so we decided to release him," he added.
