The highly anticipated clash between MI and RCB does not disappoint in terms of quality on display every time the teams face each other.
However, the match in Mumbai will be the only time these two sides will face off in the league stages in 2025. The reverse fixture in Bengaluru will not take place for any ‘revenge’ for the losing team in Mumbai.
Here, TSN takes a deep dive into the reasoning of the two sides only facing each other once and explains to you why it is happening.

Historically, every team in the IPL plays 14 matches each in the league phase of every season. When it was an 8-team league, every team played every other team home and away, accumulating 14 matches each before the playoffs.

However, with the introduction of 2 new teams, i.e., Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, in 2022, the tournament would have exceeded the regular window of mid-March to May, and the number of games would have substantially increased.

So, starting from IPL 2022, the BCCI divided 10 teams into two groups of five teams each. Every team now faces the other four teams in their group twice (home and away), i.e., 8 matches.
When it comes to facing teams from the other group, every team only faces one designated team of the other group twice, and all other teams face off only once, accumulating into 14 matches for every team like it was before.

Similarly, in 2025, MI and RCB find each other in different groups and face each other only once.
MI faces Chennai Super Kings twice from the other group like the Delhi Capitals is that one designated team for the Royal Challengers.
Following are the two groups for IPL 2025 for better reference:

The BCCI has created these groups on the basis of past performances (MI and CSK in different groups), competitive balance/rivalries (KKR and RCB in same groups) and the geographical and logistical considerations (LSG and DC from the North in the same group).
