Will IPL 2025 be suspended? BCCI goes into a huddle as it awaits Govt directive – Mathrubhumi English

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated a review of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season in light of the rapidly escalating border tensions between India and Pakistan. The decision to assess the situation comes after Thursday's (May 8) match between the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was abandoned midway due to security concerns stemming from air raid alerts in the neighboring cities of Jammu and Pathankot.
"We are reviewing the situation right now," IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told PTI when questioned about the league's continuation amidst the escalating military conflict.
"It's an evolving situation. We haven't received any directive from the government. Decision will be taken keeping the best interest of all stakeholders in mind," Dhumal added, highlighting the cautious approach being adopted by the board.
Following the abrupt halt of the Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals match at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, BCCI stakeholders convened an emergency meeting to discuss the implications of the escalating border situation.
The match itself had a delayed start due to rain, and at the point of interruption, caused by a sudden blackout initially attributed to floodlight failure, the Punjab Kings were in a strong position at 122 for 1 in 10.1 overs. The blackout was later confirmed to be a security measure in response to air raid alerts in nearby Jammu and Pathankot.
Subsequently, both the teams and the spectators, who had filled approximately 80 percent of the picturesque 23,000-capacity stadium, were safely evacuated. "There was no panic from the spectators. They (spectators and players) were moved out of the stadium very carefully and safely," a source from the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association told PTI.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that several individuals chanted anti-Pakistan slogans while leaving the stadium, reflecting the heightened national sentiment. On the field, Punjab Kings' Prabhsimran Singh was unbeaten on a blistering 50 off 28 balls, while his opening partner Priyansh Arya had contributed a fine 70 off 34 balls before being dismissed by Delhi Capitals' pacer T Natarajan just before play was suspended.
When questioned about the next scheduled IPL fixture between the Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Lucknow, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal stated, "It is on as of now but obviously it is an evolving situation."
Notably, Dhumal himself was actively involved in the evacuation process at the Dharamsala stadium, personally assisting in directing spectators to safety.
