Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have executed a trade, sending all-rounder Shardul Thakur to Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
The trade marks a return to his original franchise for Shardul Thakur, who remained unsold in the last edition’s auction and was later roped in by LSG as Mohsin Khan’s replacement. LSG had originally acquired the Mumbai all-rounder for a sum of Rs 2 crore.
“Lucknow Super Giants all-rounder, Shardul Thakur is all set to represent Mumbai Indians, following a trade between the two franchises. The Mumbai based all-rounder was picked up by the Lucknow Super Giants for INR 2 crore as an injury replacement for the 18th edition of the league, wherein he featured in 10 games,” IPL’s official statement read.

During his time with LSG, Shardul featured in 10 games and claimed 13 wickets. However, his economy rate was notably high, standing at 11.02. Notably, LSG are actively looking to rope in a premier overseas all-rounder to enhance their squad balance. By trading Shardul to MI, the franchise successfully freed up the necessary budget, allowing them to pursue their key foreign player target ahead of the next auction or trading window.
The upcoming season will be the first time he plays for his state team, Mumbai, in the Ranji Trophy while holding the title of captain, having been appointed to the role before the 2025/26 season. In the IPL, the all-rounder will play under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, the star India all-rounder who replaced Rohit Sharma as captain ahead of the IPL 2024 season and has continued to lead the Mumbai Indians since then.
Shardul’s IPL journey has seen him become a well-travelled and successful campaigner across several franchises. His debut came in 2015 for the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab), where he played a single match. He subsequently found more consistent opportunities with the Rising Pune Supergiants in IPL 2017, scalping 11 wickets in the season—a performance that led to his India ODI debut later that year against Sri Lanka. He then joined the CSK in the 2018 mega-auction, claiming 16 wickets in 13 matches to play a role in their title-winning comeback. He had a standout season for CSK in 2021, finishing as their highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps in their next title victory. Since then, he has had stints with the Delhi Capitals (2022) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (2023), before briefly returning to CSK for the 2024 season. He went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega-auction before being acquired by the LSG, the team he has now been traded from.
