'Brand Ke Liye Khel Rahe Hai': Suresh Raina Denies MS Dhoni's Role In IPL 2025 Mega Auction- News18 – News18

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina has said that while he was never close to the auction planning desk at the Chennai Super Kings, the management always made a call to skipper MS Dhoni to discuss the details, but after the team’s performance in IPL 2025, it looks like the latter had no hand in it.
Raina said that Dhoni couldn’t have been involved in the decision-making, judging by the team composition and performance as they languish at the bottom of the table.
Raina had already criticised Chennai’s auction strategy during the humbling defeat to the Mumbai Indians, and he repeated his point after another tame loss to the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
“They (management) always make a call to MS I remember that. I was never close to the auction planning, to be very honest. I never had a discussion with the management regarding all of this," Raina said while speaking on Star Sports.

“MS used to get a call sometimes, whether to get a player or not, or make a bid, but he was never fully involved. The manner with which they did this auction, you can imagine, Dhoni aisa auction kar hi nahi sakta (Dhoni can never do an auction like this). He will mention the 4-5 players that he wants, that is it," Raina said.
Chennai have been forced to name multiple replacement signings midway through IPL 2025 too.
Chennai, with only two victories under their belt this season, are on the brink of not being able to make the playoffs in two consecutive years, for their first time in their history.

“A 43-year-old captain, who is playing as a brand and for fandom, is putting in the effort. He is keeping wickets at this age, captaining the side, taking the entire weight of the team on his shoulders," Raina said.
“What are the other 10 players doing? The 18 crore, 17 crore, 12 crore players are not responding to the captain," Raina added.
