CJI Sanjiv Khanna recommends appointment of Justice B R Gavai as next CJI
Justice br gavai: Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna on Wednesday (16 April 2025) recommended the Union Law Ministry to appoint Justice BR Gavai as the next CJI. He will take oath on 14 May 2025 as the 52nd Chief Justice of the country. The current CJI Sanjeev Khanna will retire on 13 May. BR Gawai will be the second Chief Justice coming from Scheduled Castes, before that CJI KG Balakrishnan was also of Scheduled Castes.
BR Gawai’s tenure will be 6 months
Justice BR Gavai will remain CJI till 6 months after assuming the post and will retire in November 2025. Justice BR Gawai is from Amravati in Maharashtra. He started work as a lawyer in the year 1985. He then worked with Raja Bhonsle, the former Advocate General of Maharashtra and later a judge of the Maharashtra High Court. BR Gawai continued to advocate the Bombay High Court from 1987 to 1990.
Bulldozers raised questions on action
BR Gawai was appointed as Assistant Pleader and Assistant Public Prosecutor of the Government of Maharashtra in the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court in the year 1992. He became the additional judge of the High Court in the year 2003. BR Gawai came to the Supreme Court in the year 2019 and is now going to become a CJI. Last year, BR Gawai questioned the bulldozer action.
Justice BR Gawai said on Monday (14 April 2025) on the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ambedkar that the nation will always be grateful to the constitution. In the Supreme Court premises, Justice Gawai said, “The nation will always be grateful to Dr. Ambedkar, because his and his colleagues prepared the constitution. India is strong, progressing and one of the fastest growing countries in the world. It is his philosophy, ideology and vision which is united and strong.”
