CSK' captain MS Dhoni (C) and teammate R Ashwin (R) unsuccessfully appeals for leg before wicket (LBW) against Mumbai Indians' Rohit Sharma (L) during their IPL 2025 clash
India’s legendary spinner Harbhajan Singh isn’t happy with the way the depleted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been underutilising veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. CSK’s campaign in the 18th edition of the IPL has been disastrous, resulting in their early elimination from playoff contention. The five-time champions have struggled throughout the season, managing only two wins while suffering eight defeats, placing them at the bottom of the league standings.

R Ashwin, who was acquired by CSK for a whopping sum of Rs 9.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega-auction in November, has featured in only seven matches and has taken five wickets. Harbhajan Singh specifically criticised CSK’s decision to exclude Ashwin from their recent four-wicket loss to the Punjab Kings.

“Chennai did not select the team based on conditions. Had Noor Ahmad, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja played together against Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings could have won the match. You did not pay Rs 10 crore for Ashwin to bench him. I do not know why he is not playing, but it seems he might have fought with someone,” Harbhajan said on JioHotstar.

Harbhajan further drew everyone’s attention towards how several players within Chennai Super Kings squad have delivered subpar performances, but only Ravichandran Ashwin was excluded from the playing eleven.

“He is not the only one who has not performed. Others are still playing despite their ordinary performances, but Ashwin is out of the team. He should have played against Punjab, as the ball was spinning,” he further added.

MS Dhoni-led CSK are scheduled to face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their next IPL 2025 encounter  which will take place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 3.

Currently positioned at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table, CSK will be looking to turn their fortunes around in this away game. Meanwhile, RCB are in a much stronger position, holding the second spot in the league standings with seven matches in 10 games.
