IPL 2025: Defending Champions KKR in Trouble: Playoff Chances Slim – Pune Times Mirror

Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) find themselves in deep trouble midway through IPL 2025, with their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. Having lost 5 out of their first 8 matches, KKR currently sit at just 6 points on the table, making their road to the top four significantly harder.
Led by Ajinkya Rahane, the team recently suffered a humiliating defeat at their home ground against Gujarat Titans, further denting their campaign. For a direct qualification to the playoffs, KKR now need to win at least 5 of their remaining 6 matches, which would take them to 16 points — typically enough to secure a top-four finish.
While their current form doesn’t inspire much confidence, KKR fans will recall the team’s remarkable comeback in 2014, when they won 9 consecutive matches after a poor start and went on to lift the trophy.
Even if KKR manage to win 4 out of the remaining 6 games, reaching 14 points, their qualification would depend heavily on a strong net run rate. Fortunately, KKR’s net run rate is currently in the positive, which keeps their playoff hopes alive — but they must avoid any heavy defeats that could bring it down.
As the league heads into the crucial second half, every match will now be a virtual knockout for KKR, who must rediscover their winning form quickly to stay in contention.
