IPL 2025 Introduces 120-Minute Buffer To Prevent Washouts In Final League Games – OneCricket
OneCricket
With the monsoon knocking early and rain already washing out a few games, the IPL 2025 has finally decided to stop playing catch-up with the weather. In a move that is both smart and long overdue, the league has now officially added two extra hours of buffer time for each of the nine remaining league matches.
Not just the playoffs anymore, even the group stage gets the rain-time cushion now. After a week-long pause in the tournament due to cross-border tensions, the IPL is clearly not in the mood for more interruptions. And honestly, with so much still riding on playoff spots, no one wants points being split without a ball bowled.
Out of the nine matches left, eight are scheduled in the evening, with only one day game: GT vs CSK on May 25. The usual cut-off for an evening match has been 10:50 PM IST but with this new allowance, play can now stretch all the way to 11:56 PM, if needed. For afternoon fixtures, the game can go on till 7:56 PM.
So even if the skies open up, there is now a solid window to get in a full 20-over game, or at least the minimum 5-over contest to ensure results.
It is no surprise that the IPL decided to shake things up. This season has already seen three matches abandoned due to rain:
Apart from that, PBKS beat RCB in a rain-shortened clash and GT got the better of MI in a stop-start affair. The weather has already had too much say in who gets points.
The RCB vs SRH game on May 23 in Bengaluru has been been shifted to Lucknow. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Bengaluru through the week and the BCCI wasn’t willing to roll the dice again.
It’s a big blow for RCB fans, especially with the playoffs on the line. But looking at how things have panned out in the city so far, this move makes complete sense.
