IPL 2025 playoff race: KKR victory makes the fight for the top-two spots even crazier – Firstpost
The race to the IPL 2025 playoffs has become exciting after two huge upsets in two days. After Rajasthan Royals (RR) stunned everyone with their win against Gujarat Titans (GT), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) added more drama by defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by 14 runs on Tuesday. If Chennai Super Kings (CSK) can manage to pull off an upset against Punjab Kings (PBKS) tonight, it will get even crazier.
Both RR and KKR were sitting near the bottom of the table before these matches, but their wins against teams in the top four of the IPL 2025 standings have made the fight for the top two spots and playoff qualification a lot more interesting.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are currently on top with 14 points, but Mumbai Indians (MI), Gujarat Titans (GT), and DC are now all stuck at 12 points each. With DC losing to KKR, they missed a chance to move closer to a top-two finish, while KKR have kept their playoff hopes alive, moving to 9 points with a better Net Run Rate (NRR).
Punjab Kings (PBKS) are right behind the top four with 11 points and a game in hand, while Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are hanging on with 10 points. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are still in the fight mathematically, but they will need to win almost every remaining match to stay alive.
RCB (14 points): A couple more wins should be enough for Royal Challengers Bengaluru to seal a top-two finish. They are currently the most comfortable team on the table.
MI, GT, DC (12 points each): Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Delhi Capitals all need at least two more wins from their remaining matches to stay safe.
PBKS (11 points): Punjab Kings have momentum and a game in hand. If they win two of their last three games, they could sneak into the top four. Net Run Rate could be key for them.
LSG (10 points): Lucknow Super Giants must win at least two of their last three matches and hope other results go their way to have a real shot at the playoffs.
KKR (9 points): Kolkata Knight Riders are still alive. They must win all their remaining games and boost their NRR. Even then, they may need some help from other results.
RR, SRH (6 points each): Both Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad need to win all their matches from here and also depend on a lot of other teams losing.
CSK (4 points): Chennai Super Kings are almost out of the race. Even if they win all remaining matches, qualification looks very difficult unless there is a huge miracle.
