The Indian Premier League (IPL) is back for a record 18th season with more excitement and thrill, as ten teams with newly built-up squads look to battle it out for the coveted trophy.
The new edition starts with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) hosting the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday, March 22, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Ahead of the much-anticipated new season, The Sporting News asked Twitter (X)’s chatbot, Grok, about who would emerge triumphant in this year’s IPL and see what was the response.

Grok responded that as the IPL 2025 is yet to start, it’s difficult to choose a clear winner as of now. Although it is the two teams with the most IPL titles who will be once again the frontrunners in this edition.
The AI prediction read: “Predicting the winner of IPL 2025 is tough since the tournament is still in its early stages as of March 16, 2025, with the opening match set for March 22. The outcome depends on many factors—team performance, player form, injuries, and even luck—which are impossible to pin down this far out.
“That said, based on post-auction buzz and historical success, teams like Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are often seen as frontrunners. MI, with five titles and a strong squad bolstered by recent acquisitions, are betting favorites according to some sources. CSK, also with five wins and MS Dhoni’s leadership (if he plays), remain a powerhouse.”

It further added that teams like KKR might have a chance at glory this time around again even after losing out on some of their key players, while other teams like Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Delhi Capitals could be a surprise package this time out.
“Defending champs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have a shot but might face challenges after losing key players. Other teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Rajasthan Royals (RR), or even dark horses like Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) could surprise, depending on how their new lineups gel.”

Grok concluded that according to fans on X, MI and CSK have the best chances of winning the tournament, while a section of fans are hoping for a miracle from the underdogs like Delhi Capitals or Punjab Kings.
“Fan sentiment on X shows varied predictions—some back MI for their depth, others see CSK or SRH redeeming past seasons, and a few root for underdogs like Delhi Capitals or Punjab Kings.”
“But it’s all speculation now. We’ll have a clearer picture once the matches start and we see how strategies and players perform on the field.”
Whether AI will get it right or not, only time will tell.
