IPL 2026 Auction: MI Can Save Up To INR 16 Cr By Releasing THESE Players – Cricket.com
Mumbai Indians need game changers with Rohit Sharma not being as consistent as they would like him to be at the top. With Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Jasprit Bumrah, they have those guys in the batting and fast bowling departments. They need an extravagant all-rounder and a brilliant Indian spinner.
To acquire those marquee players, they would need funds and releasing some players from their squad could give them that option.
Here’s how MI can free up to INR 15 Cr in their budget by releasing the following players.
Bought at INR 9.25 Cr, Deepak Chahar played 14 matches, but took only 11 wickets, contrary to what he is famous for doing–picking wickets at will. His average of 34 was only better than his average of 40 in 2024 and 74 in 2017, two seasons where he played less than 10 matches.
Thus, releasing him makes all the sense, as he did not repay the investments that the franchise made in him and doesn’t look in such great shape as to repay it in the next season either.
Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar of Afghanistan, a mystery spinner, was given INR 4.8 Cr at the auction, but injury ruled him out. He was replaced by Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman.
Now that Mitchell Santner has already proven that he is more than good enough with both ball and bat, MI will do well to release Ghazanfar and free up INR 4.8 Cr.
Englishman Reece Topley could play only one game in IPL 2025 and even in that game he couldn’t take any wickets. With Trent Boult set to be the main overseas pacer, MI could free up INR 75 Lakh by releasing Topley to strengthen their position in the IPL 2026 mini auction.
Lizaad Williams of South Africa didn’t feature even in a single game and hence releasing him and getting 75 Lakh in store makes all the sense ahead of an important auction.
Robin Minz was the designated wicketkeeper-batter. The left-handed from Jharkhand scored just six runs in two innings at a strike rate of 40 in IPL 2025. His performances on the domestic circuit haven’t been that encouraging either, and hence freeing INR 65 Lakh by releasing him would be a better option for MI ahead of the crucial auction.
