The IPL 2026 season will be having some major changes before the auction itself. The trade talks for Sanju Samson have now almost been confirmed with him joining CSK. However, this also comes at the cost of two players for the franchise.
With the IPL 2026 auction coming closer, the trade talks have accelerated. In the entire trade window, it has been Sanju Samson who remained the center of attention. It was rumoured after the end of IPL 2025 that he won’t be a part of Rajasthan Royals for the next season.
But now it seems that the rumours could be true, with several sources claiming the deal between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings to be confirmed. This also comes at a price for Chennai, if the deal gets finalised. CSK is being asked for two of its key players in place of Samson, which could be a challenge for the team.
Let’s take a look at a timeline of the trade deal involving Sanju Samson.
The IPL 2025 season was not good for Rajasthan Royals and Sanju Samson both. Rajasthan Royals did not perform well, finishing 9th in the standings. Samson was also not available for the team for the majority of the tournament, as he suffered an injury. In his place, Riyan Parag stood as the captain of the team.
It was visible to the fans that there is some sort of internal rift within the team. During a team discussion, it was seen that Samson was being sidelined, as Rahul Dravid discussed with Riyan Parag. After the IPL 2025 came to an end, there were no rumours or reports regarding Samson and Rajasthan Royals.
But the reports emerged as soon as the IPL Trade Window opened for the 2026 season. Sanju Samson was made available by Rajasthan Royals to trade with any other IPL team. For this, several teams showed interest, with Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals coming out on top.
Following the rumours in July and August, things remained a bit quiet in the month of September. But things were about to take a massive blow, which shaped the reports of now. In October 2025, there were reports of the rifts between Sanju Samson and Rajasthan Royals.
It said that Sanju Samson reportedly wants to leave Rajasthan Royals ahead of the next season. With this, fans also believed that there was something wrong going in the RR management. As these reports came, fans even started to wonder which team could possibly be the next location for Sanju Samson.
The reports said that Samson will either be a part of the IPL 2026 auction or he will be traded to any other team. For this, teams had started to show interest again. Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals stood in the race of getting Samson to their line-up. All teams want a player who would be a wicket-keeper and also a captain choice for them.
Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals had entered a potential deal. Both teams were looking forward to the players who could be a possible replacement for Sanju Samson in the trade deal. Since Rajasthan is also looking forward to strengthening their batting line-up, their focus was on Delhi’s batsmen.
For this, the team eyed Tristan Stubbs. The inclusion of the Proteas batsman to their line-up could have helped them to a great extent. Samson being replaced for Stubbs was looking at a possible deal and this even remained on cards for a long time. Just when fans thought this could be the time for Samson to change his IPL team, things took a turn.
It would have been a reunion for Sanju Samson and Delhi Capitals. But Rajasthan Royals demanded one more uncapped player from Delhi Capitals in place of Samson. It should be noted that Samson is valued at 18 crore rupees in the IPL, and Stubbs is being valued at 10 crore rupees.
Due to this reason, Rajasthan Royals demanded Delhi Capitals to bring another player to the table for the deal to take place. But Delhi Capitals denied trading another place along with Tristan Stubbs, as it would have affected their line-up a lot. Eventually, the trade deal between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals had been called off.
After the deal between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals didn’t take place, fans thought that they might not be able to see Samson in any other team. But this became the time when Chennai Super Kings decided to take a surprise entry in this case.
The team had already shown interest in having Sanju Samson to their side. But now, things could have been better for them, knowing that a competitor, Delhi Capitals, is out of the race. Moreover, for Kolkata Knight Riders, the team had been looking forward to KL Rahul for the trade deal, which also opened ways for Chennai Super Kings.
When the trade talks finally started between the two teams, it was said to be a swap deal. Since Samson is a player worth 18 crore rupees, it was clear that Chennai Super Kings had to sacrifice a player who was worth this amount to them. But it was Rajasthan Royals who decided to make a call on the player they would be trading with Chennai Super Kings.
And the team decided to call for the veteran all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja. He has spent the majority of his time in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings, and now could potentially be traded for Sanju Samson. This is not where the demands of Rajasthan Royals had come to an end, as they asked for even more.
The team even asked for Sam Curran in place of Sanju Samson. This means two players of Chennai Super Kings would be going to Rajasthan Royals, and only one player from Rajasthan will be joining them. Although there is no confirmation on this deal yet, several sources claim it to possibly take place.
