The defeat effectively knocked out the defending champions from IPL 2025 playoff contention, thus wrapping up a poor season for Ajinkya Rahane’s side.
On Wednesday’s outing at their home stadium, KKR won the toss and opted to bat first, but lost openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (11) and Sunil Narine (26) cheaply. Rahane stabilised the innings with a well-measured 48-run knock, but lost his wicket after an audacious reverse sweep attempt at Ravindra Jadeja.
After that, Andre Russell added 38 runs quickly before poor shot selection cost him his wicket, and Manish Pandey showed patience to bat through the innings with 36 off 28, taking KKR to a competitive total of 179/6.
Chennai’s spin department was superb at the Eden pitch, with Noor Ahmad shining particularly in his four-wicket spell, conceding 31 runs in four overs.
Chasing 180, CSK lost both openers, Ayush Mhatre and Devon Conway, to ducks, while debutant Urvil Patel’s 31-run knock off 11 deliveries came to an end because of Harshit Rana.
With KKR looking in control of the game, on came Dewald Brevis, who scored a quick 52 off 25 runs before a good catch from Rinku Singh sent him back to the pavilion. Rinku took another diving catch to send back Shivam Dube, who anchored the innings with a 45-run knock off 42 deliveries.
With the chase entering the final over, captain MS Dhoni started with a six, and tailender Anshul Kamboj ended with a boundary to seal a comfortable win for CSK with two balls to spare.
