Mallikarjun kharge letter to PM modi: Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi) on Tuesday (6 May 2025) regarding the caste census. He has also given some suggestions to PM Modi through the letter.

While sharing a letter on his X account, Mallikarjun Kharge wrote, “My letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on caste census. I wrote a letter on April 16, 2023, carrying forward the demand for the caste -census of the Indian National Congress. It is a matter of regret that I did not get any answer to this letter. Unfortunately, the leaders of your party and you have attacked the Congress and your leadership to raise this legitimate demand, which you accept today and your leadership to raise this. In the interest of empowerment, you have now announced that the next census (which was to be in 2021) will be included as a separate category, but I do not have three suggestions for your views. “

‘Census questionnaire design important’

He further said, “The design of census questionnaires is important. The Ministry of Home Affairs should take inspiration from the Telangana model, the process of finalizing the questionnaire and the sets of questions asked for both. Whatever the results of the caste census, it is clear that the arbitrary border of 50 percent reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Class (OBC) should be removed through constitutional amendment. It was challenged in the Supreme Court and maintained it on January 29, 2014.

‘Census gives their rights to marginalized sections’

Mallikarjun Kharge also said in the letter that any process like caste census which gives their rights to backward, oppressed and marginalized classes of our society, can not be considered divisive in any way. Our great nation and our big -hearted people have always been united when we have done after a recent cowardly terrorist attacks in Pahalgam.

‘You will seriously consider my suggestions’

He further said, “The Indian National Congress believes that to ensure the social and economic justice and status and opportunity given in the preamble of our Constitution, it is very important to conduct caste census in the above mentioned way. I am confident that you will consider my suggestions seriously. I request you to discuss the issue of caste census with all political parties soon.”
